Quote Rules!
When you repeat someone's exact words, the repeated words are a quotation.
Examples:
Mike said, "Today I saw a frog with red markings."
"I've never heard of a frog with read markings," said Amy.
The first word of a quotation begins with a capital letter. a comma separates the quotation from the words that tell who spoke.
If a quotation is a question, it ends with a question mark.
"Did you do anything special today?" asked Uncle Bill.
An interjection is a word that expresses emotion or feeling. It is usually followed by an exclamation mark. The two quotes below express strong feeling The first contains an interjection.
"Wow!" yelled Mike.
"That's great!" cried Amy.
Sometimes a quotation is divided into two parts. If the two parts make one sentence, use commas to separate the quotation from the words that tell you who spoke.
"Aunt Jane," said Mike, "let me help you."
If a divided quotation is two separate sentences, use a period after the words that tell who spoke. Begin the second sentence with a capital letter.
"Dave is outside," Mike whispered. "He is my best friend."
