| Procedures are a part of life. We follow procedures for using a telephone book, boarding an airplane, approaching a traffic light, and attending a wedding. The reason that we have procedures in life is so that people can function in society knowing the acceptable and efficient way other people do things.
The following are procedures for this classroom. These procedures establish our classroom culture.
- What do I do if I forget my pencil or paper?
First, you are unprepared. You will receive a strike If, however, you have a Dowling Dollar, you may borrow a pencil without getting a strike. This must be done BEFORE class officially starts..during Daily time.
- What do I do when I come in the room?

- What do I do if I need to leave the room?
I will sign your agenda. I must sign your agenda for you to leave the room. You must take your agenda with you.
- What do I do if I am tardy?
Give me your tardy slip (if you have one) and have a seat. I will mark you tardy-excused or not..
- Where can I find the assignments posted?

Student Journals are collections of informal writing assignments. We will work on a short writing assignment periodically. These prompts will be varied in content. Other times, we will be writing for specific Composition or Grammar Skills.
Every so often, one of the entries will be selected and refined. These selections will be called Required Journal Entries. The topic may be chosen from the topics that were completed during those two-three week time frames. These required topics will be graded more closely according to the Specific Skills Check List. These required journal assignments will be posted in our working folder on the Internet.
Class work will usually be due the same day in class, but sometimes it might be necessary to finish it at home because of unforeseen events.
Two Independent Writing Assignments are due each month for submission to the literary magazine during the first and second term. The student may choose the type of writings to submit. These writings can be something from the class assigned writings or something that was produced independently.
Book Bingo is a reading project that will be due once at the end of each term. The students will chose from preselected novels for reading independently. The activities are done independently, as well, except for the end of term group activity. The students will respond to the writing weekly in their journals. They will meet periodically with others who are reading their same book to discuss the section read. At the end of the term, there will be a selection quiz, a book review and an activity packet due.
Portfolios are collections of selected assignments done throughout a grading period. They will include a determined number of writings along with reflections on the assignments and evaluations from others to include peers and parents.
