Alpha Unit

Sentences/Narrating/Telling an Anecdote

  1. Anecdote-a story about something that is usually told
  2. Character-the individuals that interact in a story
  3. Complete predicate-the verb plus any other words or word phrases that relate to the verb
  4. Complete subject-the part of a sentence that includes all the words that tell who or what the sentence is about
  5. Declarative sentence-a sentence that makes a statement
  6. Exclamatory sentence-a sentence that expresses strong or sudden feeling
  7. Imperative sentence-a sentence that expresses a command or a request
  8. Interrogative sentence-a sentence that asks a question
  9. Natural order-the order of a sentence when the subject comes before all or part of the predicate
  10. Observation chart-a strategy to help a writer remember and outline details
  11. Plot-events in a story
  12. Predicate-the part of a sentence that tells what the subject does or what happens to the subject
  13. Quotation marks-marks used to show the actual words of the speaker.
  14. Run-on sentence-two or more sentences that run together without correct punctuation
  15. Sentence-a group of words that expresses a complete thought
  16. Setting-where a story takes place
  17. Simple predicate-the verb in the predicate part of a sentence
  18. Simple sentence-a sentence that has one subject and one predicate
  19. Simple subject-the main word in the subject part of a sentence
  20. Subject-the part of a sentence that tells who or what the sentence is about
  21. Understood subject-Usually found in a command sentence.

  1. Abbreviation-a short form of a word
  2. Appositive-a noun or phrase that identifies or explains the noun it follows
  3. Comma-used in sentences for several reasons including to separate words in a series
  4. Common noun-names any one of a class of objects the noun that follows
  5. Noun-a word that names a person, place, thing, or quality
  6. Order circle-can assist writers in placing things in their proper place
  7. Paragraph-a group of sentences that tell about one main idea
  8. Plural noun-a noun that names more than one person, place, thing, or quality
  9. Possessive noun-a noun that tells who or what owns
  10. Proper noun-a noun that names a particular person, place, or thing and is capitalized
  11. Sequence-the order of something
  12. Singular noun-names one person, place, thing or quality
  13. Supporting sentence-develop the main idea of a paragraph
  14. Topic sentence-states the main idea of a paragraph

Chi Unit

  1. Action verb-tells an action that the subject is doing
  2. Helping verb-used to help the main verb of the sentence
  3. Verb phrase-a main verb and one or more other verbs
  4. Verb tense-tells the time expressed by the verb
  5. Verb-a word that expresses action, being, or state of being
  6. Linking verb-a verb that connects the subject of a sentence with a noun or adjective that comes after the verb

  1. Possessive pronoun a pronoun that tells who
  2. Subject pronoun-a pronoun used as the subject or as part of the subject of the sentence
  3. Indefinite pronoun-a pronoun that does not refer to a specific person or thing
  4. Pronoun-a word that takes the place of a noun
  5. Object pronoun-a pronoun used after an action

  1. Adjective-describes a noun by telling which one, what kind, or how many
  2. Proper adjective-an adjective that is formed from a proper noun
  3. Demonstrative adjective-an adjective that points out a specific person or thing
  4. Limiting adjective-the articles a, an, and the

  1. Adverb-describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb

Iota Unit

  1. Preposition-a word that shows the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to another word in the sentence
  2. Prepositional phrase-a group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun

Kappa Unit

  1. Compound predicate-two predicates joined by or. and, or but that have one subject
  2. Compound sentence-two simple sentences joined by words such as and. but, so. and or
  3. Compound subject-two subjects joined by and that have one predicate
  4. Inverted order-the order of a sentence when all or part of the predicate comes before the subject
