Haiku

Jellyfish come near

In many brilliant shades

Big, little, translucent

                                                                      Tanka

In the coral reef

Many fish and plants live and

They dwell together

In their peaceful land until

Man comes and destroys it all.

Quatrain

The Beluga Whale

Cannot hold a pail

He has no hands,

But his teeth are like rubber bands

How could I forget the seahorse?

They are very cute

Though their skin is coarse

They’d make a good flute.

Couplet

The fish came swimming

   As the sea started dimming.

It swam so deep

That it couldn’t make a peep

And it didn’t come back

Until the squid started to pack.

Then it ran into a wall

And got caught by Paul.

Little Sally Sue

               Dove into the ocean blue

       She was very scared

         And know is impaired.

Writing

Audrey Hepburn

She was the star of Breakfast at Tiffany's, and worked for UNICEF after she retired from screen acting. Who was she? Audrey Hepburn, born in 1929, was loved by all. She went from big screen actor to a UNICEF ambassador. Audrey Hepburn went through many miscarriages and divorces, but she didn't let that interfere with her acting or UNICEF career. Audrey Hepburn affected change in the 1960s and influences society today.

Audrey Hepburn lived a life of tragedy and glamour. Audrey grew up during World War Two. She lived in hiding for part of her life because they were in fear of the German soldiers. While in hiding, Audrey took secret dance classes. Once food started getting scarce at Audrey Hepburn's house she had to quit dance lessons because she was so weak. Audrey Hepburn's father moved to
England in the middle of the war and her parents soon split, but this didn't keep Audrey from playing her first role in “Netherlands in 7 Lesson.” She then found out she had natural acting ability and decided to move to America to continue her acting career. While in America, Audrey met her first husband, Mel Ferrer. Audrey and Mel tried to have a baby when she finally found out she was pregnant. Nine months later, Audrey miscarried. She did this four more times in her lifetime. She had two children, each with a different husband. Later in 1992, Audrey found out she had colon cancer and died at the age of 63 in 1993.

Although her life was short Audrey Hepburn had many great accomplishments in acting. In the 1950s, Audrey made a hit movie called “Roman Holiday.” She won the best actress award at the Academy Awards for this movie in 1953.Another hit that Audrey released was “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, a hit in the 1960s. This movie was where she got to show off her chic style and queen likeness, like in “Roman Holiday.” “Charade” was another sixties hit that Audrey played in. In this movie, Audrey plays a widow thats husband stole 250,000 dollars, and she is hunting for it with another man who she falls in love with. In 1964, Audrey played a flower girl/ duchess in “My Fair Lady”, which is somewhat like a Cinderella story. During the sixties, Audrey played many sophisticated parts like the one she played in “How To Steal A Million.” In 1967, Audrey played in a romantic film called “Two for The Road.” In this movie, Audrey and her film husband played a couple who are remembering the good old days from when their marriage was flourishing. Even though Audrey had natural talent for acting she soon moved to bigger issues and more helpful work with U.N.I.C.E.F. When working for U.N.I.C.E.F, Audrey traveled to many poverty stricken countries like
Africa and Cambodia. There she tried to help the children by getting them glasses and clothes. While in Africa, Audrey started to feel sharp pains in her stomach and soon found out she had colon cancer. While doing all these great jobs, Audrey set many fashion trends.

While making movies like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” Audrey set many trends. In “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” she wore a sleek black dress which is still in style today, even though it wasn’t that popular in the sixties. In “Charade” she wore big sunglasses which everyone had to have soon. Audrey was the new teen idle in the sixties. After Marilyn Monroe everyone needed a break. Audrey was just the opposite as Marilyn. Marilyn wore skimpy clothes and was also very appealing to men, but Audrey had a little girl like charm and didn’t need to dress in skimpy clothes to be appealing. Audrey also influenced the movie world by making it ok for women not to be judged by only their looks. She wanted the world to know that she had a brain too.

Many actresses today still look up to Audrey Hepburn. She was the perfect role model. Audrey was a humanitarian and an actress. She was one of the first actresses to do this. Now many actors and actresses are humanitarians too. Audrey is also looked up to by many mothers today. She really cared for her children and loved their company. Just thinking of how many miscarriages Audrey went through should tell people trying to have kids to never give up. Now there is an extremely strong U.N.I.C.E.F thanks to Audrey. She contributed most of her life to U.N.I.C.E.F and helped many children who probably wouldn’t have even had a chance to live without her.

In conclusion, Audrey Hepburn was a great person, who helped many people. Even though her life was filled with sadness Audrey Hepburn still kept her cool in front of her fans and the children she helped. People should be glad that Audrey couldn’t be a dancer because if she was she probably wouldn’t have affected so many people’s lives. Audrey had a short but meaningful life.

“Kidnapped by Aliens”

By: Alia

Hi, I’m Alia . Many of you have probably heard my story, right? You haven’t! Then I’ll just have to tell you… Last Tuesday when I was in school I noticed something different about all of the teachers. They were weirder than normal. In first period, my math teacher Mrs.Connoley, was acting way to nice. She was acting like we hadn’t done anything wrong, even when Tommy threw a spitball at her. I thought that was totally weird because she usually would write him a detention right away if he did this. The other teachers acted the same way she did, and by the end of the day a lot of the kids were missing from class. In fifth period I was still a little suspicious and was walking down the hallway when suddenly somebody grabbed me into the janitor’s office. Right when I got in I knocked my head on something and passed out. A few hours later, I think, I woke up and I was in some ugly bright pink room. Kids from all of my classes were being escorted out and taken somewhere. Suddenly I saw my friend Bri and asked her what was going on. She said, “We’re being kidnapped by aliens disguised as our teachers!” I totally freaked out and by the time I calmed down it was my turn to go into the room. A thing that looked like a human with an oversized head escorted me into the room. It was orange and there were kids all around m being put into grey suits. After I finished putting mine on they escorted me into yet another room where they put you in lines marked with a weird language. I soon found out I was put in the line to go to the human testing room. I thought, “Oh no! They’re gonna kill me!” I had to get out of there.

Suddenly I saw a small space shuttle that I knew I would have to take to get out of there. I took all of my friends that were sent to human testing and put them on the ship. I had no idea how to work the craft so I started shouting commands at it. The ship finally went up and we went back to Earth.

We had no idea aliens surrounded us on Earth. We thought that everyone was normal, but that wasn’t true. Many of my friends were hunted down and killed, but I escaped. I now have to live in a sewer in what used to be New York. If anyone can help me, come quick. I’m afraid they will find my hiding place.

Final Draft- Flag Burning

At first I had mixed feelings about flag burning "Am I against or for" I said to myself. After reading many great articles on the Internet I made up my mind. I am for flag burning because it is protected under the first amendment of the Constitution, and a new amendment is not necessary. If congress took away our right to burn the flag then they could take away our right to protest against injustices.

Flag burning is our natural right under the first amendment in the Constitution. Cannot and should not take away our right to burn the flag. The first amendment of the Constitution states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise there of; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." If Congress were to make a law about flag burning the Supreme Court would have to reject this law because it is a violation of our rights.

Have our rights gone down a hole? A writer at Flag burning is not Speech said that "Burning the flag is protected under freedom of speech." We the people should be able to choose if we want a law against flag burning, instead of our Congressman choosing for us. If Congress took away our right to burn the flag in protest then they could take away our right to protest anything. If this happened we would soon live in a communist country and would have no rights at all.

The law against flag burning has been going through Congress for a while now. Matt Dilworth at Earlham Word Online said, "Flag Burning did not pass through Congress." That was a couple of years ago when flag burning was going through Congress for the first time. Now it is going through again. Many people right now would probably say that that would be a good law because of what happened on Sept. 11. If that law would be passed in probably twenty years we would get freedom of speech taken away altogether.

Now you can most likely see why I think we shouldn't have a law against flag burning. Our children would have no more rights left if they did pass a law. Some people might say that it is disrespectful to burn the flag in protest, but it isn't. It helps someone show that they're in disagreement to the law. If Congress were to pass a law that would make flag burning illegal then I would definitely protest.
